GIFFNOCK THEATRE PLAYERS – A WEE TOUCH O’ CLASS
MONDAY 26TH – WEDNESDAY 28TH MAY, 7.30PM
More than 20 years after his death Rikki Fulton is still remembered with great affection by generations of TV and theatre audiences. He was one half of the iconic duo Francie and Josie, and portrayed the world weary but hilarious Rev I.M. Jolly in the classic Scotch & Wry TV series.
But he started as a serious dramatic actor and was in fact an early member of Giffnock Theatre Players! He acted and directed in a number of early productions in the 1950s.
And after decades of entertaining Scots audiences in variety, panto and on TV he followed a new direction in the early 1980s. He took a play by the French dramatist Moliere – Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme – and along with comedian Denise Coffey, he adapted it as A Wee Touch O’ Class, under the pseudonym Rabaith.
Taking the lead role he performed it at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1985, and a Scotland-wide tour followed.
Set in 19th century Edinburgh, the play follows “nouveau riche” Archibald Jenner (Erchie) who is determined to be accepted by upper-class society. To do so he sets about taking fencing and elocution lessons and spending lavishly on clothes while being vulnerable to exploitation by others.
Expect laughs-a-plenty – lots of banter, comical situations and playing on words. And with a wide range of characters, there is a manner of intrigue going on ….
