School Swimming Programme
School Swimming Programme
Our school swimming sessions are offered to all children in Primary 4 attending a school in East Renfrewshire. Our School programme consists of a 6 week block of half hour or hourly sessions, dependant on the schools’ choice and size of classes during the academic year.
Current ratios are 1:12 for school sessions (max 36 children) per class, however, dependant on ability split, this can be subject to change and an extra teacher would be required.
Week 1 is an assessment week, where all children for health and safety purposes need to be evaluated on their water strengths and abilities, therefore, as a result children can expect very little teaching to take place on the first week of the programme. If children have been inaccurately assessed, then this is rectified as soon as possible.
Our school programme delivery fits into the National Framework for Swimming in Scotland, which is an all-inclusive progressive pathway targeted at Primary 4 school children.
All sessions are delivered by fully qualified swim teachers, who also hold a valid East Renfrewshire PVG and Safeguarding Young Children Certificate. Schools are only charged for the cost of the swimming teacher. All other costs are waived by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure.
The aim of our school programme is for each child to become water confident and develop core aquatic skills, including:-
- Safe entries and exits
- Submerging and aquatic breathing
- Floatation and rotation
- Streamlining and propulsion
- Sculling and Treading Water
We would like to highlight that these sessions are not comparable to our swimming lesson programme, but as stated above are an introduction to water confidence and core aquatic skills.
